How to formulate research variables?

In scientific research, researchers are based on study variables when conducting their experiments, The study variables are measurable features that can be calculated. The study variables are those simplified parts of the complex phenomena that the researcher intends to study.

All research projects are based on study variables. Study variables are the characteristics of the individual, group, educational system, or environment of interest in the research study. Study variables can be clear and easy to measure, such as gender, age or study path. Other study variables are more complex, such as socio-economic status or academic achievement. Study variables may also include aspects of the educational system, such as a particular teaching method or a mentoring program. Environmental characteristics may also be study variables, such as the amount of school funding or the availability of computers. Therefore, once the subject of the general research is determined, the researcher must identify the main study variables of interest.

 Research variables

Research variables can be defined as “a set of triggers and responses that interact with each other to create a kind of relationship that the researcher wants to experience, it is known that the characteristics of research variables vary from one community to another, and research variables are that are the variables that are changeable from one individual to another in Society is an example of research variables: weight, gender, level of education, occupation, age”.

Research variables are also defined as everything that accepts quantitative or qualitative measurement One of the most prominent features of the research variables is quantity and how to influence and influence, and the researcher must identify the relationships between the research variables and then adjust them.

Correctly identifying research variables plays a major role in reaching the correct results of scientific research.

 Types of research variables

Types of research variables and academic studies, research variables are what is going on in the context of research, and the researcher collects the scientific material for the study. Each study has a set of research variables. One study contains more than one variable, and perhaps some scientific research requires more than one dependent variable and more than one independent variable, in addition to intermediate variables and monitoring its impact in the experiment.

Research variables types can be categorized into several types, including:

1. “Independent variable”: This type of research variable is called the exciting factors and is one of the “research variables” considered by the leading researcher in the phenomenon, and the “independent variable” is also called experimental “variables” and it results from the effects of the “independent variable”, i.e. the value of these “variables” changes according to for the value of the “independent variable”. There is a relationship between the “independent and the dependent variable”:

  • An uninterrupted relationship consisting of examining the existence or non-impact of the “independent variable on the dependent variable”.
  • An ongoing relationship, in which the researcher studies the extent to which the “independent variable affects the dependent variable” and the degrees of this effect.

2. Intermediate Variable: This “independent variable” is second-class, i.e. the researcher changes this variable to see its impact on the relationship between the “independent variable” and the “dependent variable”, i.e. to examine whether this variable increases or weakens the effect of the “independent variable” in the “dependent variable”.

3. The proven variable: the variable that the researcher determines and eliminates its effect on the “independent variable”, so that the researcher can study the impact of intermediate variables, and the researcher should install the “independent variable”.

4. The nested variable: It is the variable that affects the phenomenon studied by the researcher, but it is not noticeable, but we infer it through his effect on the “dependent variable” by its effect on the “independent variable”. The nested have some characteristics, including the following:

  • The effect of the “independent variable on the dependent variable”, and it is inferred through the “independent and intermediate variable”.
  • The effect of the “independent variable on the independent variable” is considered an indirect effect, the first three variables are considered as inputs, the dependent variable is an output, and the nested variable is located between the inputs and the dependent variable.

 Formulating variables

Formulating variables are in many ways based on the type of variable as follows:

  • Differential formula: The formulating variables through which two cases are compared.
  • Implicit formula: That is, formulating variables by condition.
  • Reporting Formulation: Formulating variables through an expressive phrase.
  • Advocacy Form: That the researcher calls for more investigation and research on the variables in order to the formulating variables, and the formulating variables of these is used widely in qualitative research.

Things to consider when formulating variables

When formulating variables, the following should be taken into account:

  1. The choice of variables must not be random.
  2. Formulating variables must be either in the negative or the proof, so it is not permissible to formulating variables in the negative and the evidence together, so that it is given the ability to verify them experimentally.
  3. Formulating variables should be in a way that is easy to understand.
  4. Predictions for formulating variables should be clear and specific.
