تبرز أهمية علم اقتصاديات التعليم بمضمونه علم ومجال قديماً وحديثاً في الوقت نفسه، حيث بدأت الدراسات العلمية تُنتج هذا العلم في بداية الستينات من القرن الماضي على الرغم من جذوره التاريخية البعيدة التي تصل الى أفلاطون وما قبله، وكغيره من العلوم فقد اختلف المتخصصون في هذا العلم على تحديد مفهوم واحد له، بسبب وجهات اختلاف النظر والتخصصات، والاختلاف حول أصل هذا المجال وحداثته، ففي هذا العلم نجد من يركز على التكلفة للتعليم وأخر من يركز على العائد الاقتصادي، وأخر يركز على العائد الاجتماعي والنفسي.
وأما حديثاً فتبرز الحاجة الى هذا العلم نتيجة التقدم الهائل في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات، حيث أدى ذلك الى حدوث تغييرات جذرية واسعة في أساليب الحياة المعاصرة، وبخاصة في طبيعة العلاقات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وتعديل بعض جوانب التشريع واستحداث بعض التغييرات في النظم والمؤسسات الكبرى في المجتمعات المتقدمة، حيث يوصف المجتمع المتقدم بانة المجتمع المعاصر أو مجتمع المعلومات التي تتدفق فيه المعلومات بسهولة وغزارة ويسر، بحيث يمكن الحصول عليها من مصادر متعددة ومتنوعة من دون عناء أو تكاليف باهظة، وقد أصبحت المعرفة والإبداع من أهم العوامل المؤثرة والمحددة في هذه المجتمعات التي لا تقنع باستخدام المعلومات لفهم واقع الحياة وتفاعلاتها والاستفادة منها في توجيه مختلف انماط الأنشطة وبخاصة المجال الاقتصادي، وإنما تعمل بالإضافة الى ذلك على إنتاج المعرفة وتسويقها بحيث تصبح مصدرا اقتصاديا رئيساً، ومن هنا برزت الحاجة والأهمية الى علم اقتصاديات التعليم.
